The structure of the hair: hair is composed of a very resistant structural protein: Keratin.
Each hair is made up of three layers:
1. an innermost layer called Medulla.
2. A middle layer known as the Cortex. This part defines the strength, texture and color of the hair (melanin).
3. An outermost layer called the Cuticle, which serves to protect the cortex.

Hair Root Structure: The hair root (located under the skin) is enclosed within a hair follicle. At the base of the hair follicle is the dermal papilla. The dermal papilla, richly vascularized, provides nourishment for the production of new hair.

The hair regrowth cycle: Hair follicles grow in repetitive cycles. Each cycle can be divided into three phases.

Anagen phase - growth phase: this phase simultaneously affects percentages varying between 80% and 90% of the hair. Hair grows about 10 cm per year. This stage can vary from 2 to 7 years.

Catagen phase - transition phase: at the end of the Anagen phase the hair enters the Catagen phase which lasts approximately 2 weeks. During the Catagen phase the follicle is reduced to approximately 1/6 of its normal length. The follicle contracts and detaches from the dermal papilla.

Telogen phase - resting phase: The resting phase follows the Catagen phase. This phase lasts approximately 5-6 weeks. During this period the hair does not grow but remains attached to the follicle while the dermal papilla remains in a resting phase. About 10-15% of all hairs are in this phase at one time. At the end of the Telogen phase the hair follicle enters the Anagen phase. The dermal papilla and base of the follicle come together and a new hair begins to form.
